About Us

Who we are, where we come from, and where we're headed as a church family

Who we are

Greetings Mighty Warriors!

Breakwater Community Church was born on June 20, 2017, when a group of twelve individuals met with two officials of the San Diego Southern Baptist Association (SDSBA) to discuss the possibility of a church plant. At the meeting, associational leadership gave the green light to proceed, and Roger VanDerWerken agreed to serve as the founding Pastor.

We aim to be a beacon of light and to bring the gospel message to downtown Oceanside. We often try to work with local organizations, including TriCity Pantry, to reach those that need help. We may be small, but we are inspired to do what we can!

Where we come from

Breakwater was started in 2017 by a number of families. Back then, this group imagined a church that was truly welcoming to everyone - where everyone had a seat at the table regardless of their backgrounds. In 2018, the church moved into 506 Nevada Street, established, and are committed to a great future of bringing the gospel message to downtown Oceanside.

Where we're headed

Breakwater is committed to fostering a Christian family striving to study God's word and to dive deeply into the riches of God's Kingdom. We offer many ways to learn God's word, hoping to continue to reach, preach and teach.

What this means for you

A breakwater is a structure built along coastlines designed to break the impact of high winds and powerful waves, offering ships and other vessels safe harbor. Breakwater Community Church has been established to help God's people find peace amidst the harsh trials of life, offering a safe harbor for all. We're saving a seat for you. Wherever you're at in your faith journey, you'll always be accepted as part of the Breakwater family.
